lunchtime fun
Went out to lunch with Anne and saw them demolishing the OLD Safeway
right next to the NEW Safeway! That means F-U-N for civil engineers!
Plant!
I inherited this plant (and an office chair) from a guy in the next
cube over who left. The vines stretch across the whole wall to Tim's
cube! Hope I can keep it watered!

MORE!
I saw this guy too!!!
This was as close as I got, for obvious reasons. EEK! (I was still
on my bike, it's a good way to get around ;-) )
Moose!
So I was riding to work this morning, humming the song from Wizard of
Oz where the Wicked Witch is riding her bike (because my shifters were
frozen and I had to pedal really fast) when all of a sudden, I look
down the cross street to look for cars and there's A MOOSE standing
there, just 2 houses down! I figured the best thing to do was to keep
pedaling and DANG I didn't have my camera. So I'm riding home
(keeping an eye out for it) and I look down the road it was on and no
moose. But I hear this crunching sound... so I look behind the house
and THERE IT IS! So I rush home to grab the camera and when I get
back he's just laying here... (I included the house because LOOK AT
THAT SUN!! Spring is coming!) So I ride past and...

parking lot, take 2
I tried to post it last night. It's a picture from the parking lot I
hang out in. The building there has free wi-fi. So I park outside
and hang out in my car. Pathetic, I know, but if they were open later
I'd hang out there! Friday I get my own cable and internet!
Also, you should note this picture was taken at 9 pm and it's not all
the way dark. It's nice. ;-)

new bike!
My new bike with it's new seatpost! I rode to work today and I will
tomorrow too! So fun! It's only 3 blocks away so I don't even change
or anything!
It's crazy how everything has fallen into place. I got the bike as
soon as I unloaded my car in the new apartment. And when I was going
to get the seat post, I though "I wish I had a pull chain for the
ceiling fan" and when I stepped out of the car, there was one in the
parking lot! True story!

Went back to the ice park tonight. It was really cool at night! And
it was interesting to see the sculptures that looked cool during the
day weren't that cool at night and vice versa...
it was also very cold. I didn't stay long.
detail
Stunning detail on these things. I'm undecided-- on one hand, they're
beautiful works of art, but on the other hand, they're not nearly as
huge as the ones at Tech. Can't really compare them but I do. :-P
Ice Park
Went to the ice park today! Pretty neat! Some of them have broken or
sublimated-- it's been going on for a few weeks now. I'm going back
later to take pictures in the dark. They're all lit up at night.

natural light!
what a difference a little sunshine makes in an office environment!
Plus, it's only been sunny up here in Fairbanks. I hear this is about
the time of year when the days start getting longer than they are in
the lower 48. Hopefully the temperatures start coming up too-- it's
been in the single digits in the mornings and gets up to the
mid-twenties in the afternoon. Everything stays frozen.

This is my new desk! The "cubicle" walls are real walls. They're
short but they're all drywall and paint. My desk is huge, I have a
set of 36 x 48 inch printouts on the desk on the other side (it makes
a U shape).
And yes, I do feel like an evil genius with 2 monitors. :-P

Mountain
Another mountain. Surprise! Don't they all start looking the same?
Caught this guy on the way up to Fairbanks today. It was a nice
drive-- a little snow just about halfway, but that was it. Didn't see
Denali today, I think he was behind some clouds. But dang, that range
is impressive.
Alright, I'm off! Later gators!
Self Portrait!
Jen took this one the other day-- it was so windy and rainy that we
sought shelter behind this wall. I had to post it because she went
home today. We had such a great trip! I'm glad she could come with!

Jen
Jen at Flattop Mountain. She's facing the city. In the background
you can see the mud flats-- must have been low tide. While it was 40+
degrees in town it was cold and windy up here.
Flattop Mountain
The peak is Flattop mountain. There is a nice trail heading up there.
Today we parked at the trailhead but just went to the overlook that
looks over the city (the city was behind me when I took this one).
Snowshoeing
We went snowshoeing in a park in Anchorage. It was really warm. The
snow was melting but it still required snowshoes in the woods.
Big snowplow!
Last night we stopped and saw this snowblower they had for the
railroad tracks. Brian and Brad decided to try and move it
(unsuccessfully).

mud flats and mountains
The view from a pullout in the Chugach State Park... Jen and I took a
quick drive down the road a bit. It was foggy and rainy and really
windy (but not in Anchorage) so we didn't go far.
"clean" bill of health
So after our less-than-positive experiences with Volkswagen dealers
over the last week, I begrudgingly called the dealer here in
Anchorage. He said "yeah, we can get you in sometime in the next
hour." So we were off. Dropped off the keys, chatted with a salesman
in the showroom for about an hour about Volkswagens and Alaska and
Denali National Park... The service guy called me over and said they
couldn't find anything major. There were some minor error codes but
nothing to worry about. The best part? They did it free of charge!
So I'm no longer worried about my little car and I didn't even have to
spend any money. That's what customer service is about!

Anchorage!!!
Jen and I made it to Anchorage!!! What a fun trip! Jen flies home on
Monday and I'll head to Fairbanks.

ALASKA!!!
We made it!!!! Just one more day of driving before we get to
Anchorage. Jen and I have been discussing how good it will feel to
sleep in the same place for a few nights!
Mountains
saw a lot more mountains today. Can't even remember where this was--
we didn't see much civilization today and we saw a ton of mountains.
Watson Lake
Today's first stop was just down the road from the hotel to see the
Sign Post Forest. Unfortunately, the snow was pretty deep and we
weren't able to get in there to look around.
