So ridiculously proud of Bentley tonight. Not just for passing her
Beginner Obedience class but because she's such a good dog! Good job,
Schmentz!

takin' a walk
Bentley was going bananas when I was leaving for the pool so I brought
her with (she goes a lot less bananas when she realizes we're going
for a car ride!). I made it worth it by taking her for a walk around
the high school (it's a big school!). She's such a good girl-- I'm so
in love!
pretty sky
of course break-up is totally worth it-- the days are getting longer
so fast and everyone knows summer's right around the corner! I caught
this cloudy sunset around 8:30 tonight (though the sun wasn't even
that low!)

snickers and velvet
here's another shot. These coastal dogs looked hot! More floppy
tongue shots! Snickers and Velvet lead the whole race-- velvet is the
one with blue eyes.
John Baker, Ceremonial Start
Here's a picture of John Baker's whole team. Funny to think I was a
little bummed that by the time I got out to the trail I had missed
mushers 1 through 30-something (and all my favorites) but I still got
a few shots of the eventual winner!

John Baker
I took this picture of John Baker last weekend at the ceremonial
start. Right now he looks unstoppable heading up the coast on the way
to Nome!
reading
Today I sat on the deck and read for a while. It doesn't look that
warm but it was mid-30's with all that sun... I wore a black jacket
and a big furry hat and wasn't cold at all. :-) Neither was
Bentley-- she rolled in the snow while I read!

walk
went for a walk tonight... It's been really gorgeous around here--
crystal clear skies and daylight till past 7 (8 tomorrow!). This
morning it was -5 and by mid afternoon it was pushing 30-- pretty
crazy temperature swings but that's been the norm lately.

Point Woronzof
Went down to Point Woronzof for a better view. It's just down the
road from my house. The airport was behind me, so I saw a lot of
planes too! And the green hue (in the foreground) is caused by a
green light at the end of the runway. This was a 30 second exposure.
Front Porch View
Wasn't planning on going out to see the Northern Lights tonight but
when the view from your front porch looks like this, how can you not
try and escape the city lights?

Cat in the Hat
Hugh Neff's iditarider wearing a Cat in the Hat costume to promote
reading to your kids or something... It's been a few years since I've
seen a life size cat in the hat! ;-)

Michiganders
These dogs are on Ed Stielstra's team. He's from McMillan, Michigan! (Just looked up his webpage... this is Fiddle and his brother Banjo!)
more dog tongues
Here's an especially slobbery one. Also, I read on a blog that they
get special tags-- so if they're lost or sent back to Anchorage they
can keep the dogs straight. I can read a few of the tags in some of
my pictures-- they all say "XXXIX," I assume for the 39th iditarod! Hard to
believe they're all going to run to Nome!
white huskies
The white dogs remind me of Bentley! And I was really surprised how
small the dogs were. I think the dogs at the sprint races were
bigger-- at least taller and skinnier.
cold weather kilt-ing
Scotsman Wattie McDonald's team ran off the trail! He and his handler
were both wearing kilts-- it's a cold hike through deep snow in a
kilt!
Space Dogs
These space dogs are from Fairbanks and they looked HOT! I think
that's why they had the reflective coats on! (Ken Anderson's dogs)
Rick Swenson
This is Rick Swenson's team. He's won the iditarod 5 times over three
decades and has finished in the top 10 24 other times! Good lookin
dogs!
Athletes
These dogs are such amazing athletes! I believe this is Brennan
Norden's team from Kasilof. He's a rookie this year. Happened to get
a good snap of his dogs. :-) The ceremonial start in Anchorage is a
crazy, urban ride with some VERY excited and strong dogs. They have a
sled, the musher, a handler and an "iditarider" for this portion
through town. I saw one team pulling a bail of hay too-- I think they
just want to keep them weighed down so they don't go too crazy!
Chugach View
Took a quick hike to my iditarod viewing spot of choice. What a
gorgeous view!!! The race was in the trees at the bottom of the hill.
