dog and tree
Here's the dog and the Christmas tree. I included her because she rarely
gets her picture taken. Just kidding!
Ribbon Salad
And I made the ribbon salad. I was making jello ALL DAY LONG!!!! But it
was definitely worth it. ;-)
lights and snow
Frosty was mostly buried and it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
(this was before the thaw, danggit!)
so much snow!
I flew home before Christmas and brought some snow with me! This is the
view from the back door.

Snowflakes
Fairbanksan snowflakes are very spindly. I hear in the cold air they
have lots of time to form delicate crystals.

Cornucopia
Thanks to Jen and Katie I have this lovely display over my monitor.
It arrived just after Thanksgiving! Oddly enough, I hadn't seen fall
colors since September! Thanks guys! I smile every time I see it!
surprise!
One Monday (a few mondays ago) we came into work and a giant lantern
was hanging from the ceiling! I took this a while ago but just
remembered to blog it. It's hard to take pictures these days when
it's always dark and cold!!!

overflow
Here's a lesson for the readers out there: "if it's black, don't go
back!"
This is a picture from a remote lake in Alaska where some friends own
land. We landed and glided across the surface and then took off
again. Then we circled back to inspect the tracks and sure enough--
they turned black. What happens is new, heavy snow weighs down the
ice enough that water rises up through the cracks (forming puddles in
the tracks). This kind of slushy conditions causes problems for
snowmachines and planes, so we didn't land on the ice.
Overflow is a concept I learned in my Arctic Engineering class-- so it
was pretty cool to see in real life!
plane ride
Ryan took Brian and I up in his plane! It was so neat! And what a
beautiful part of Alaska!
Alaskan Thanksgiving
Brian took this picture of Turkey Day festivities-- his pals from
Michigan, Ryan and Heidi, are looking towards the camera. There's a
deep-frying operation on the left side of the picture and if you look
closely you can see Yours Truly in the distance. I was on the phone
with Mom and Dad!

Frosty Trees
This is right along the Chena River. Frosty trees and good light!
I'd take more pictures but it's cold up here!
the desert!
Here's a shot I fixed up the other day-- nothing wrong with the
original but this on really pops. It's the "other" end of Lake Mead.
The more famous end is the Hoover Dam, of course.

palms
I bought myself an early Christmas present-- Photoshop! I've been
playing with my new tools with all kinds of old pictures... I took
this one in Vegas. I've always liked it and I might have blogged a
more bland version before.

beautiful day
It was a beautiful day today! I ended up driving to the polls since
we had gotten some new snow the night before... I took this picture
with a big grin on my face-- it feels good to vote! And even though
my vote went to the losing side here in Alaska, I am excited about
Barack Obama and our country's future!

more
180 degrees from the last picture, looking towards town. The bottom
of the "curtains" were purple and it looked like it was coming right
at me! I can see them from my front door and am looking forward to
more picture opportunities. Next time I'll get them more in focus
(unlike this one!). It makes me feel like God said "yeah, it's cold
and miserable up there, I'll let them watch THIS."

frosty
I sat in the car hoping the heat would come on so I wouldn't have to
scrape the windshield but it didn't work so good. Anyway, looks cold,
eh? It was about 10 degrees, which was warmer than -9, which is what
it was when I rode to work!!!

me!
If I look cold, well, I wasn't. I was quite warm. The snow was deep
enough that my feet were dragging! The snow provides quite a bit of
resistance so I got a good workout today. You can see my wintertime
set up with my headlamp mounted on my helmet. Sun rise is about 8:45
these days and it won't be long before I'm riding home in the dark too.
Creamer's Field
Went out to Creamer's Field to take pictures but forgot it was a field
and there weren't many trees. Whoops.
