Here's a shot of Marais from tonight. I have to cram a years-worth of
pictures into my short time home! She's 14 now, pretty much deaf and
a little confused... but she still acts like a puppy most days! (and
she'll still pose for pictures!)

Marais
Happy New Year!
We ended 2009 much like we began... with a lot of Rock Band! Of
course we had a few choice beverages, cocktail weenies and other
goodies too. At midnight we rushed out to blow the bugle and then
broke out into a spontaneous Rathbun family dance party (sans Walt!).
A lot has changed but many things stay the same... We're so blessed!
Had a good 2009--looking forward to 2010 ("twenty-ten")!!!

"Furniture City Sets the Table for the World of Art"
Taken from the parking garage at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (with
my new lens!)
Christmas Cookies
we worked on Christmas cookies on Christmas Eve. We put our guests to
work! Just kidding, but Uncle Boyce and Aunt Sharmin really did help
frost cookies. ;-)
Candy town
After visiting with the Rathbuns, we spent the night in Bay City and then went to Aunt Sheila's house in the morning. I had a great time socializing with my cousins and aunts and uncles. Oh, and grandma, of course. The cousins and I made these candy houses out of some weird wafer stuff. Dad found this cool VHS tape, though Aunt Sheila seemed surprised too!
dropping in
Saturday morning, bright and early, all 5 of us piled into the
suburban and drove up to the Alpena area to surprise my Aunt Sue! We
had a great time and set up lots of cameras to take a group shot to
remember the occasion!

new locks
1st homeowner's challenge: replace the locks [in the 30 minutes you have
before swimming]. Helpful hint: open the door before you take off the
handle! One of the knobs is on upside down but that's an easy enough
fix... I aced the deadbolt and that's the most important part. ;-)
(PS there will be no brass in this house, not even door knobs)

Finally got my tree up (and decorated). The previous owner left a few
things... lucky me, I got those black curtains! I'd like to put up
some sheers to let some light in but might do something heavier for the
winter. Just not black!!!

swim meet
We had a masters swim meet this weekend. I was terribly nervous--
didn't want to see how slow I am! Luckily it was in meters so you
can't really compare times. :-) My 200 medley relay team set the
state record for our age group. There wasn't a record before but a
record's a record, right? I posted it on facebook too, but a gal I
swim with took a few pics during the meet (thanks, Maura!) so I
thought I'd post one. This is me in the 100 backstroke.
word of the day: rime
Anchorage was cloaked with fog all last week [I can see the lights of
downtown tonight so I think it's cleared up a bit]. Everything is
coated in this soft, frosty ice. I thought it was hoarfrost (learned
that in HS english) but when I googled it I think it's more of a "soft
rime" because it was deposited from fog. The slightest breeze sends a
cascade of crystals through the tree branches but we haven't had a
lick of wind. It's absolutely gorgeous out there, which is a nice
treat as we march on towards the solstice. (this is the view from my
balcony this afternoon)

FINISHED QUILT TOP!!!
Here's the finished quilt top. Could have waited to have a big reveal
but I am just so excited about it!!!
The picture's a little distorted-- it's mostly rectangular. (within
half an inch or so!)
Had a busy night trying to find an outfit for the company Christmas
Party this weekend and finish my quilting homework... late night!

Vancouver Airport
this is at the airport. Specifically, the walkway between the train
station and the terminal. I thought they had some cheesy "bird
sounds" CD playing in these trees but then I realized there were
actually that many birds in there!!! I think they were starlings
taking a pit stop... never got to see them fly away (love watching
them!).
before the plows...
Where I left my car early thanksgiving morning... (figured I could
look this up if I couldn't find it when I got home!)

flashback!
since I haven't taken many pictures lately and you're probably getting
sick of the "out the office window" pictures, here's a flashback. The
date information says it was Tuesday of Thanksgiving week in 2002. We
went to a Red Wings game. I think this was the game we had 4
nosebleed tickets (no joke, last row) and one ticket about 9 rows up
from the ice. Walt was not interested in the picture-- probably
watching the game!!!

QUILT TOP!!!!
Ahh! I'm so pumped! My quilt top is mostly done! There is a little
more border work (lots more fireweed fabric) but then the top will be
done!!! I finally figured out the sashing and then it was a breeze!

bald eagle
long time no blog. Here's one from last weekend. This was taken by
West High-- one of the best views in down! It's up the hill from the
lagoon.

new (to me) machine
I didn't need a new machine... but I saw this at an estate sale and
had to bring it home. It's a Bernina 730 Record and it runs like a
dream. All the moving parts and the body are metal and seem to be in
great shape. It came with those green "accessory drawers" filled with
feet and spare needles. I know it was purchased in 1971 at a store on
Fireweed that I drive by every day, and the previous owner left notes
in the manual about sewing "tricot panties" among other things. I
also purchased one of her oil paintings and hung it above my sewing
area for inspiration. Now back to sewing... :-)

AF1 again
Took this with my 50mm lens and then cropped it in... That lens is
nice and sharp in the middle aperatures-- which is why I picked it
over the other lens for this. In this shot you can even see the light
blue on the bottom. I went to work prepared (brought the camera) and
even took an early lunch so I wouldn't miss it! (the road shown is
the southbound Seward Highway)
Air Force One
The President is in town for a few hours! They closed down the airspace
around Elmendorf which makes the city seem awfully quiet! He had
fighter jet cover (way high) and came in from the east and turned over
downtown to land. Pretty exciting. How many people have seen Air Force
One land from their office? :-) It's a gorgeous day for a visit!

Dustin's Moose Picture
This moose was hanging around our office yesterday (everyone saw it but me! grr!). Dustin went out and followed it over to the BP building where he expertly lined it up with one of these moose outline lights! Just another day in Anchorage. :-)
