of course break-up is totally worth it-- the days are getting longer
so fast and everyone knows summer's right around the corner! I caught
this cloudy sunset around 8:30 tonight (though the sun wasn't even
that low!)

snickers and velvet
here's another shot. These coastal dogs looked hot! More floppy
tongue shots! Snickers and Velvet lead the whole race-- velvet is the
one with blue eyes.
John Baker, Ceremonial Start
Here's a picture of John Baker's whole team. Funny to think I was a
little bummed that by the time I got out to the trail I had missed
mushers 1 through 30-something (and all my favorites) but I still got
a few shots of the eventual winner!

John Baker
I took this picture of John Baker last weekend at the ceremonial
start. Right now he looks unstoppable heading up the coast on the way
to Nome!
reading
Today I sat on the deck and read for a while. It doesn't look that
warm but it was mid-30's with all that sun... I wore a black jacket
and a big furry hat and wasn't cold at all. :-) Neither was
Bentley-- she rolled in the snow while I read!

walk
went for a walk tonight... It's been really gorgeous around here--
crystal clear skies and daylight till past 7 (8 tomorrow!). This
morning it was -5 and by mid afternoon it was pushing 30-- pretty
crazy temperature swings but that's been the norm lately.

Point Woronzof
Went down to Point Woronzof for a better view. It's just down the
road from my house. The airport was behind me, so I saw a lot of
planes too! And the green hue (in the foreground) is caused by a
green light at the end of the runway. This was a 30 second exposure.
Front Porch View
Wasn't planning on going out to see the Northern Lights tonight but
when the view from your front porch looks like this, how can you not
try and escape the city lights?

Cat in the Hat
Hugh Neff's iditarider wearing a Cat in the Hat costume to promote
reading to your kids or something... It's been a few years since I've
seen a life size cat in the hat! ;-)

Michiganders
These dogs are on Ed Stielstra's team. He's from McMillan, Michigan! (Just looked up his webpage... this is Fiddle and his brother Banjo!)
more dog tongues
Here's an especially slobbery one. Also, I read on a blog that they
get special tags-- so if they're lost or sent back to Anchorage they
can keep the dogs straight. I can read a few of the tags in some of
my pictures-- they all say "XXXIX," I assume for the 39th iditarod! Hard to
believe they're all going to run to Nome!
white huskies
The white dogs remind me of Bentley! And I was really surprised how
small the dogs were. I think the dogs at the sprint races were
bigger-- at least taller and skinnier.
cold weather kilt-ing
Scotsman Wattie McDonald's team ran off the trail! He and his handler
were both wearing kilts-- it's a cold hike through deep snow in a
kilt!
Space Dogs
These space dogs are from Fairbanks and they looked HOT! I think
that's why they had the reflective coats on! (Ken Anderson's dogs)
Rick Swenson
This is Rick Swenson's team. He's won the iditarod 5 times over three
decades and has finished in the top 10 24 other times! Good lookin
dogs!
Athletes
These dogs are such amazing athletes! I believe this is Brennan
Norden's team from Kasilof. He's a rookie this year. Happened to get
a good snap of his dogs. :-) The ceremonial start in Anchorage is a
crazy, urban ride with some VERY excited and strong dogs. They have a
sled, the musher, a handler and an "iditarider" for this portion
through town. I saw one team pulling a bail of hay too-- I think they
just want to keep them weighed down so they don't go too crazy!
Chugach View
Took a quick hike to my iditarod viewing spot of choice. What a
gorgeous view!!! The race was in the trees at the bottom of the hill.

curled up for the ride!
Bentley's been doing awesome in the car! We spent almost the whole
day doing stuff-- a walk up at Flat Top, visiting friends and making
new ones, exploring my office (shhh!)... fun stuff :-)
scavengers
Saw a bald eagle fighting off a bunch of ravens for the french fries
or whatever they found at the park today. I see a bald eagle pretty
regularly around my neighborhood. I assume its the same one but I
don't know for sure. I see it down by Lake Hood, up to Balto Seppala
Park and between...

no knead bread
pretty pumped-- this bread is awesome! And awesomely easy! It was
squashed a little from the lid to the casserole dish (I used a 2 qt
dish) but I don't think it affected the bread... This is the first
bread I've ever made!!! (besides banana bread)

curtains!
Mom sent me these curtains! My grandma made them many many years ago
so it's cool that I have a use for them! I don't have many windows in
my house, and this one faces south so it's pretty much the best source
of natural light I've got. I couldn't bear to block any of the light
and I have no back neighbors so privacy isn't really an issue... I
think these are just what I was looking for and look lovely! Now to
figure out how to tie them back... especially on the door side...
dog chair
Bentley's pretty much claimed this chair as her own spot... and I
don't even mind because a) I'm a sucker for her cute face and b)
replacing the cushions is on my to do list (not the top, but on it
nonetheless). It's all wood, so as long as she's not chewing the
chair (she's not a chewer) she can have it! And doesn't she look cute
in front of that very old red white and blue quilt?! Lovely.

starlings
I love starlings. I don't know if they're considered pests or if I'm
supposed to, but they always make me smile. If there is such a thing
as reincarnation and I come back as a bird, I'd want to be a starling.
Up here they clean off mountain ash trees-- usually the moose get the
low ones and the starlings take care of the top berries. Bentley and
I watched (and listened) to these ones from our backyard.
kong troubles
This is Bentley and her kong. If she bit it, treats would come out!
But she just licks and licks. What a weird dog.
swim meet
Also happening this weekend is the Alaska Short Course Yards State
Championship swim meet! I swam 3 events and a relay tonight-- dropped
a lot of time in my 200 back and 500 free! Felt awesome! Time for
sleep!
canstruction action shot
so, I blogged the last 2 pictures from my phone (can't do captions)
but figured I'd explain more. Each year a group of
engineers/architects get together, design and build something out of
cans. The cans are then donated to the Food Bank. This was our first
year and we made a replica of the 4th avenue theater. We also made a
recipe using some of the ingredients in the cans. It was a lot of
work (and I skipped a few hours to swim in the swim meet!) but I think
we did a great job! (they're on display at the University Center Mall
for all you locals)

out and about
Took a walk down to Lake Hood today and caught this plane taking off.
It's a beautiful, clear day today and the sun is blindingly bright!
