These are piles driven into permafrost. Or not driven... I saw them in the basement of the engineering building at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Each of them are made of 1/2 inch steel or so.
Take it back Jim! It is so mean to say civils only! I think you guys need to send this picture to your old prof - this oughta teach him a thing or two!
