Jen at Flattop Mountain. She's facing the city. In the background
you can see the mud flats-- must have been low tide. While it was 40+
degrees in town it was cold and windy up here.

Jen
Flattop Mountain
The peak is Flattop mountain. There is a nice trail heading up there.
Today we parked at the trailhead but just went to the overlook that
looks over the city (the city was behind me when I took this one).
Snowshoeing
We went snowshoeing in a park in Anchorage. It was really warm. The
snow was melting but it still required snowshoes in the woods.
Big snowplow!
Last night we stopped and saw this snowblower they had for the
railroad tracks. Brian and Brad decided to try and move it
(unsuccessfully).

mud flats and mountains
The view from a pullout in the Chugach State Park... Jen and I took a
quick drive down the road a bit. It was foggy and rainy and really
windy (but not in Anchorage) so we didn't go far.
"clean" bill of health
So after our less-than-positive experiences with Volkswagen dealers
over the last week, I begrudgingly called the dealer here in
Anchorage. He said "yeah, we can get you in sometime in the next
hour." So we were off. Dropped off the keys, chatted with a salesman
in the showroom for about an hour about Volkswagens and Alaska and
Denali National Park... The service guy called me over and said they
couldn't find anything major. There were some minor error codes but
nothing to worry about. The best part? They did it free of charge!
So I'm no longer worried about my little car and I didn't even have to
spend any money. That's what customer service is about!

Jen and I made it to Anchorage!!! What a fun trip! Jen flies home on
Monday and I'll head to Fairbanks.

Watson Lake
Today's first stop was just down the road from the hotel to see the
Sign Post Forest. Unfortunately, the snow was pretty deep and we
weren't able to get in there to look around.

gummi bear adventures
I know you all have been wondering what these guys have been up to...
Here they are watching the bison along the road.
Yukon!
We made it to the Yukon Territory! This was taken just 10 minutes or
so from where we're staying. It was dark when we got here-- we didn't
want to be driving in the dark but the hot springs felt so good!
The check engine light was on for a bit today, but no "electronic
power control". Car felt great today, just 974 more miles to go!
Good night, cats!
Liard Hot Springs
We stopped and swam at the Liard Hot Springs. It felt sooo good!
They were really warm and we talked with a nice truck driver. After
the dip we felt warm and refreshed.
Muncho Lake again
A view of Muncho Lake, with a historical mile marker in the
foreground. It was so beautiful.
Muncho Lake
We saw this section of the road on a documentary about the
construction of the Alaska Highway. This is where the guy rapelled
down the cliff, set up the dynamite and was pulled back up!
What an awesome day!

done for the night
Took this picture after dinner, had to grab the camera from my car.
It's a little blurry, but if you notice, there's my little Jetta on
the right and then a long line of big trucks. When I say big I mean,
those aren't light duty pickups.
We're staying at "the Sasquatch" along with a bunch of "crews" (guys
working along the highway). We had a great dinner along with a bunch
of tough-looking guys. Don't worry, Mom, our door locks. ;-)
This morning the VW dealer couldn't squeeze us in (yeah, come on, 2
twenty-something girls, one crying (me, whoops), and you can't help?).
Anyway, the light comes and goes and most of the time we have cruise
control.

last mall shot
Another one at the West Edmonton Mall. We got in town early but
didn't get to the mall fast enough (we got there just before all the
stores started closing) but we walked around (needed it!) and had a
good dinner. Tonight we're staying in another hotel with a slide in
it! First thing tomorrow we go to the VW dealer... hopefully a quick
fix. The 3,000 RPM's isn't too bad, but the no cruise control gets
old.
Calgary Tower
Drove by the Calgary Tower when we putzed around downtown. I pointed
my camera towards it and this is what I got-- pretty good framing for
a total guess.

Days Inn, Lethbridge
The Days Inn in Lethbridge, AB. Home of the largest indoor mural in
Canada and a surprisingly scary water slide! What fun!
Car trouble
when merging onto I15 in Great Falls, Montana, suddenly the gas pedal wasn't doing anything and the EPC and check engine lights came on! I coasted to an exit, figured out my engine wasn't going above 3,000 RPM's. I drove a few miles back to the Volkswagen dealer we saw, but they couldn't help us at 3 on a Saturday. Made some phone calls-- finally talked to Dad who said not to worry too much. I checked all the fluids and everything seemed/sounded fine, so we limped to Lethbridge, AB tonight (we were only limping in MT, where we couldn't get up to the 75 mph speed limit). Seems like a minor thing, but we'll see in Edmonton. The plan is to get to a VW dealer Monday morning. The EPC light is for a "safety measure" that keeps the RPM's between 1,000 and 3,000 RPM's and won't let me use cruise control. The picture depicts our maximum speed and RPM's.
