Hatcher Pass

Hatcher Pass, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Seems like everytime I'm here everything looks different. I really
need a macro lens-- I can't get enough of the sub-alpine (alpine?)
flora up here.

berry picking

berry picking, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Andrea and I were picking berries but Bentley found grass. Mmmm...
nothing like some refreshing grass when you're hiking. BTW we're
going back next week-- too early for blueberries.

starting to see some fall colors down here! Even more colors up near

again

again, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Here's another shot, this one shows the new trail (since I'd been
there last) and a few people to get an idea of the scale...

Exit Glacier

Exit Glacier, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Today we stopped in Seward on the way back and took a quick hike up to
Exit Glacier.

found it!

tired pup

Bentley was pooped! Then she barked when the boat pulled up-- funny dog!

Bear tracks

Bear tracks, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Saw these bear tracks on the beach and TONS of scat on the trail...
we made lots of noise and were happy to not see any bears!

almost there!

50 feet?

50 feet?, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Somewhere I had read that the elevation gain was only 50 feet on this
trail... But we were much higher than 50 above the water! Ooops!

trail

Then we hiked up a hill... only to walk all the way down to the ocean
to get picked up!

brrr

brrr, originally uploaded by aimos325.

The lake had some huge icebergs and some small ones we could touch too.

Glacier

Glacier, originally uploaded by aimos325.

We hiked to the shores of this glacial lake. We were still pretty far
away but I had my superzoom lens!

tram

tram, originally uploaded by aimos325.

we made a special trip to a hand tram across a big, scary river. We
helped pull a few people across and then pulled ourselve across and
then back. It's quite a workout but was totally worth the extra 2
miles!

Hike

Took a water taxi across Katchemak Bay and then hiked to a different
pickup spot.

I didn't bring a camera (wierd, I know) but Erm was nice enough to
send along some pictures! It's been just about 10 yrs since we moved
into Good Intentions! Oh, and congrats to Rachel and Seth too!

Cool truck

Cool truck, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Saw this cool old boom truck today. They were placing concrete rings
around the base of the piles they're using as light pole bases. I've
only ever seen poured concrete light pole bases.

And I was just about to mow the lawn...

Froggy

Froggy, originally uploaded by aimos325.

This is one of the pictures I printed out for our office photo contest which we held in preparation for the fair. We printed and mounted all the photos and then a coworker took a stack to enter in the State Fair's Photography exhibit! I kinda glossed over this one when I took it, but I liked it a lot more after I cropped it and it looks really cool printed out big! It's my cousin Lexie holding a frog she caught when we walked down to the lake from the Cut River Bridge.

Bad blogger

I've been a bad blogger but here's a pic from Friday. Some rubber
matting at a playground caught fire! Looks pretty dramatic but no one
was hurt.

I'm sure this view is spectacular. And I'm already planning to go
back up there on a nicer day!

"off!"

"off!", originally uploaded by aimos325.

Bentley decided this is where she wanted to sleep when we headed into
the tent last night. I kicked her off of the air mattress and onto
the sleeping pad. Spoiled ladies last night... until someone decided
to start splitting wood at 7:30 am.

This pit potty earns the award for prettiest view from a pit potty!
Wow! It's got about 270 degrees of breathtaking scenary-- just a few
miles into the Denali Highway.

Floodlands

Floodlands, originally uploaded by aimos325.

The dam diverts flow to this area... There's a levy on one side that
stretches all the way to the Tanana River. Check out that neon green
grass and fireweed! I swear this is how bright green it was-- summer
in Alaska: can't beat it!

Dam!

Dam!, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Then I checked out the dam at the Chena Lakes Flood Control Project
(Chena Lake is part of the site/park). They can lower the gates and
block off flow to the Chena River to keep it from flooding Fairbanks
like it did in 1957.

Chena Lake

Chena Lake, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Saturday morning I woke up in my tent to rain and thunder. It was
about 50 degrees and rainy and I still managed to jump into this lake
with no wetsuit (water was warmer than the air!) and swim a 5k! It
was hard to keep going straight and I underestimated how foggy my
goggles would get but really it wasn't that hard. Just a little
longer than a swim practice and a great sense of accomplishment
afterwards. :-)

Sundog

Sundog, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Saw a sundog on my way to Fairbanks. This was taken at 10 pm. I was
surprised to see it because I think it has to be pretty cold (at least
in the atmosphere) for it to happen.

Mountains

night (after I could see it all day from my office!) but these ones
were.

Take a Hike!

Take a Hike!, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Today I hiked up towards Near Point. We didn't go all the way because
it got pretty muddy but we were high enough to get some gorgeous views
of Anchorage! The trail is in the Chugach mountains on the east edge
of town. Three girls and four dogs-- way fun!

Rain gear!

Rain gear!, originally uploaded by aimos325.

Gretchen gets rain gear! Friday night excitement at my house was
installing fenders on my commuter (Gretchen). Saturday morning I've
never been so excited to wake up to rain! I even broke out the
raincoat for the pannier and hit every puddle on the way to town. :-)
